Just read that the
Niall Mellon Township Trust has been severely criticised about its operations in South Africa. I guess that raises questions about businesses involved in charitable projects both here in Ireland and abroad - how much of it is really coming from a philantrophic point and how much is about raising the profile and thereby increasing public goodwill? Or does it matter as long as the charitable aspects are taken care of?
Read a similar story not too long ago about the
Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Apparently, while they were supporting health projects in Nigeria they were investing
more into some of the companies involved in causing some of these health problems (such as Shell etc.).
In terms of Ireland I'd be a bit sceptical about companies announcing large grants to charities - while the money is urgently needed, the question surely must focus on the intention of the grantgiver. After all we would question if Philip Morris gave money to fight lung cancer but would simultaneously continue to encourage people to smoke ... or would we?
